Overview
As the global scientific landscape evolves with the rise of emerging technologies, Africa must position itself to harness these innovations for sustainable development. The AAS–ISC Retreat provides a timely platform to reflect on Africa’s preparedness and leadership in navigating this transformation.
Organized jointly by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the International Science Council (ISC), the retreat will bring together experts to explore how Africa can reshape research and innovation systems to be inclusive, collaborative, and impact driven. Discussions will focus on strengthening interdisciplinary research partnerships, building institutional capacity, and amplifying Africa’s voice in global scientific discourse. The meeting is grounded in the shared vision of transforming knowledge systems to ensure Africa’s future is knowledge-based and innovation-led.
This collaborative retreat is funded by a project grant from IDRC held at ISC, with AAS providing local hosting support. Participants will engage in interactive sessions, expert panels, and strategic dialogues over two days.
Session: Strengthening Collaborative Research Partnerships and Networks
This session, featuring contributions from the AAS team, will examine mechanisms to create balanced, equitable, and impactful research partnerships in Africa. The dialogue will focus on empowering institutions and individuals through joint agenda-setting, co-creation of knowledge, and South-South and South-North collaboration.
